McDermott All American Tour Cue Masters billiards
The eighth stop of the 2007/2008 McDermott All American Tour (produced by the American CueSports Alliance – ACS) was hosted at Cue Masters billiards in Dubuque, IA, on Saturday, October 27. The $500 added event drew twenty-one players in a double-elimination 8-ball format on 7-foot bar boxes.

12-year old Chad Behnke (Farley, IA) ran undefeated to the finals. In the hot-seat match, Behnke (rated a “3” on a regional handicap system used) clipped Don Boll [3] (Dubuque, IA) 3-1. Earlier in the A-bracket semi-finals, Behnke dispatched Mike Rohner [3] (Dubuque, IA) 3-1, while Boll eclipsed Ron Pluym [4] (Dubuque, IA) 3-3. In the B-side bracket quarterfinals Mike Rohner eliminated Bob McDonald [4] (Dubuque, IA) at 5th place by a 3-2 margin, while Ron Pluym ousted John Sprague [3] (Clinton, IA) 4-0 at the same placement. In the B-side semifinals Rohner upset Pluym 3-1, and Rohner was further successful in the B-side bracket finals by ousting Don Boll 3-1. Young Chad Behnke’s skills belied his age, and he took control of the tourney finals immediately to dispatch Mike Rohner 3-1 for the title.

2007 Philippines World pool Championship Qualifying Tournaments

Taking place at the Star billiards Center in Grace Village, Quezon City, the qualifying event boasted a top-level field of nearly 170 players with ten separate tournaments over five days with the winner of each reaching the main event. With the pre-event qualifying tournament for the 2007 Philippines World pool Championship set to wrap up today, it’s fair to say that proceedings have been dominated by the players from Chinese Taipei.
With eight out of the ten events already contested, the Taiwanese have bagged four spots in the main event, with a further six players falling at the final hurdle.
With 43 players entered by the Chinese Taipei billiards Association, the Taiwanese certainly had strength in numbers, but with an 80 strong field in each of the events, qualifying was a massive achievement.
Lu Hui-chan was the first to make it through as he beat compatriot Chang Yu-lung 9-2 last Saturday. Lu was the 1998 and 1999 WPA World Junior Champion and now has a tough opening Group 4 match against hot-shot Yang Ching-shun.
The second qualifying event was won by Japan’s Kenichi Uchigaki who took care of Do Huan Quan of Vietnam 9-3. Uchigaki becomes the fifth Japanese player to enter the field and he gets a dream match-up against Efren Reyes on one of the TV tables.
There was more Taiwanese joy on Sunday as Ko Pin-yi set up a first round clash against 2003 WPA World Champion Thorsten Hohmann. Ko beat another Taiwanese player, Lu Hsun-cheng 9-7 to gain his spot.
Wu Yu-lun, another former WPA Junior World Champion - in 2004 and 2005 - was the victor in Qualifier 4, beating yet another Chinese Taipei player, Chien Ching-ju 9-8. He faces former two-time WPA World Champion Johnny Archer.
Wily campaigner Alwi of Indonesia who has played in the World pool Championship in 2001, was on top form to beat Wang Hung-hsiang. He now meets dominant Taiwanese star Chang Jung-ling in Group 7.
Another seasoned pro Leonardo Andam, was a popular winner at Star billiards as he beat fellow Filipino Jharome Pena 9-4 in a classy display. Andam, who was a quarter-finalist at the WPC in 2001, gets to play last year’s runner-up and 1996 champ Ralf Souquet in Group 2.
There was for the home fans to cheer about on Tuesday as Roberto ‘Superman’ Gomez won through against experienced Taiwanese player Kun Fang-lee 9-5. Gomez, who was No.1 seed at last year’s event following the first round stages, has a tough Group 16 clash against Niels Feijen (Holland) in the offing.
Finally man of the moment Shane Van Boening, the reigning US Open champion, will face unknown Taiwanese Chang Yau-mau who won the eight qualifying spot defeating Chu Hung-ming 9-6.
The 2007 Philippines World pool Championship breaks of on Saturday 3rd November as 128 players from 46 countries vie for the $400,000 prize fund.

Chau Captures Breaker’s Spooktacular 9-ball

Manuel “Javier” Chau captured the Breaker’s Spooktacular 9-ball Tournament title by defeating Ryan McCreesh. The tournament was held at Breaker’s billiards in Pittsburgh, PA on October 27-28.
A strong field of 32 billiard players started Saturday’s action. By evening, only 8 players were left. Notable players like Howard Vickery, Gary “Bushwhacker” Nolan, and “Suga” Shane Hennen were sent home out of the money.
On the winner’s side in semi-final matches Javier defeated Ryan McCreesh and Alex Olinger beat Shane Jackson. Final winners’ side match was won by Javier over Alex while Ryan McCreesh was eliminating Shane Jackson. Ryan then went on to beat Alex by a score of 7 – 3 to set up a rematch with Javier for the top spot. Both played very well with the lead changing hands several times, but Javier edged out the win out by a score of 10 – 8.

Shuff Wins First Billiard Tour Event and Shea Repeats

The Tiger pool Tour returned to action at Champions billiards Café in Frederick, MD, October 6-7 for their eleventh event. A big thank you goes out to room owner Gary Allen and his friendly hard-working staff for welcoming the tour. A strong, tough field of players came out to play for the $2,000-added money in both the open and women’s division events.
Brandon Shuff started his Saturday out with a 9-8 scare from Trevor Dentz. A quick 9-2 win over Tai Bui and a 9-5 score with Barry Bowman pitted Shuff against strong tour player Lee Holt. Holt was having a great day with a pair of 9-2 wins over Matt Clatterbuck and Dan Maruschak. Shuff advanced past Holt 9-7 to reach the final four winners’ side going into Sunday’s play. The bottom half of the bracket was ruled by Manuel Chau, who knocked off three Virginians in Luther Farley, Joe Russo, and Larry Kressel. Joining Chau and Shuff in the final four were Jerry Slivka and Danny Mulhollen III, both in the current top five on the tour rankings.
Play continued Sunday with Shuff working his way through Slivka 9-7 and Chau squashing Mulhollen 9-3. An exciting 9-8 win over Chau put Shuff into the hot seat. Not much of interest was happening in the elimination bracket. Mulhollen and Slivka both advanced to meet up where Slivka sent Mulhollen home in the fourth-place spot. Slivka quickly took down Chau to set up a rematch with Shuff in the single-set, race-to-11 finals.
The finals started out with Shuff taking a commanding 6-1 lead. Slivka never threw in the towel and fought back to 7 with Shuff on the hill. Shuff pushed to a long, tough jump shot, which Slivka passed on without even getting out of his chair. Shuff confidently drained the improbable shot and maintained his composure to run the rack out.
A field of 12 ladies came out Sunday to shoot at the cash. The final four winners’ side came down to last event’s winner, Linda Shea, tour regulars Malea Haacke and Sharon O’Hanlon, as well as Ming Ng making the most of a rare appearance. Shea advanced over Haacke 7-3, while Ng came out on top 7-6 with O’Hanlon. In the hot seat match, Shea took an early lead before Ng came back to win 7-5.
In the elimination bracket, O’Hanlon sent Haacke home in fourth place before losing to Shea. The single-set, race-to-9 finals saw a determined Shea take another early lead. Ng managed a couple more games, but it was Shea winning with a 9-6 score for her second consecutive tour win.

Lavoie Goes UndefeatedKBP Amateur 9-ball Tour / Holiday, FL

Taking place at Hammer Heads billiards in Holiday, FL, the KBP Amateur 9-ball Tour drew in a 33-player field over the October 27-28 weekend, and after the dust has cleared it was Dan Lavoie, a regular player on many of the Southern tours, who swept the chart and took the event undefeated.
After a first-round bye and four solid wins Lavoie found himself in the hot seat match facing Trevor Heal, who had an identical run on the winners’ side and was also a tour regular. After a brief showdown Lavoie come out on top 7-4 to earn the king of the hill chair.
On the one-loss side the field quickly shrank as the evening played out. The top half of the bracket showcased two great comebacks. After a first-round loss Peter Richards and Jesse Langston each took five wins before they faced up in the first money round. There it was Richards who stayed in gear with the 5-3 win to advance. On the bottom of the chart Jim Oddy and Billy Moses met after each had a late loss on the winners’ side. Moses was eager to return there, and after drilling Oddy 5-1 he was on his way again.
Moses stayed alive through the next few rounds, eliminating Brandon Byrne 5-0 then Bobby Livargo double-hill in the quarterfinals. In the semifinals another double-hill match unfolded, but this time it was Heal on top knocking out Moses 5-4. With the last match on hand a single extended race awaited the players, and just shy of going double-hill once again, Lavoie took back control in the end to take the match 9-7 and claim the event win.

Schmidt Captures Viking Cues Southern Classic 10-ball
Mr. Cues II once again proved why they are Atlanta’s Best billiards Room. This week Mr Cues II generously added $22,500 to the prize fund of the Viking Cues Southern Classic Open. The event drew a total of 256 billiard player entries and distributed over $45,000 in prize money to the players that placed in the events.

The 1st event was a $2,500 added Amateur 9-ball Tournament which brought in 97 players and was won by Matt Reed of North Carolina. Matt earned a grand total of $2410 for winning the event. The 2nd event was a $3,000 added Open 8-ball Tournament which brought in 53 players and was won by Ignacio Nacho Chavez of Mexico. Nacho earned $3,200 for winning the event. The third event was a $5000 added 1 pocket tournament which drew 34 players and was won by Larry The Truth Nevel . Larry earned $3,150 by winning the event.
The 4th event and the finale to the tournament was a $10,000 added 10 ball tournament that drew a field of 72 players and was won by John Schmidt. Schmidt earned a total of $5,500 by winning the event. There was an additional $2,000 added to the event that pitted the players against each other to see who would win the all-around championship after playing in three events. Helena Thornfeldt won the Ladies division and earned $500 while Ignacio Chavez won the all-around and earned an additional $1,500 and the coveted event title of the All-Around Champion of the Viking Cues 2007 Southern Classic Open.

Mr.Cues II in Atlanta is a family owned and operated Billiard Room it was opened by Richard and Susan Sweet in 1986 they have made several updates to the room over the years and currently have 42 tables, several of which have been recently recovered. They house 97 league teams and have weekly tournaments that consist of 9- ball on Monday nights, 1-pocket on Wednesday nights and C D 9-ball on Friday nights along with playing host to many regional tour events. Mr Cues II also has a full bar and kitchen.

Morra Than Ever in Edmonton
Young billiard player John Morra has emerged as the new Canadian hot gun with his victory in Edmonton in the second leg of the Canadian 9-ball Tour over Eric Hjorliefson (11-5). Morra jumped out to an early lead and he simply never gave it up as he has now proven that his game and his consistency have matured into a threat in any event in which he places his name. Hjorliefson, considered a seasoned champion, never got the opportunities he needed as Morra kept him seated during much of his exhibition.
The final day of the tournament brought sixteen players into the fray to compete for the championship. For some, it was an all too short day. Grant Golaiy made his exit (9-5) courtesy of Brian Butler. Brady Gollan was departed (9-6) by Nick Kruger while Eric Hildebrand was frustrated (9-6) by the shooting of Gary Hauck and Spencer Auigbelle ended the attempt of Jody Thornton (9-8).
But these victors then had to face the sticks of the men who had just been sent over to the one-loss side from the winner’s bracket. Paul Potier proved he still had room to run when he slid by Auigbelle (9-7) and Edwin Montal proved fatal to Garry Hauck (9-5). Our other two men new to the one-loss side would bring no momentum with them as Tyler Edey fell (9-3) to Brian Butler and Jarod Spence failed (9-6) against Nick Kruger. Kruger and Butler then had to face off and Butler prevailed (9-6). The other B side match saw Edwin Montal get to the hill against Paul Potier and Potier won that one (9-8).
By this time the B-side club had welcomed two new members as Eric Hjorliefson inducted Stan Torangeau there (9-6) and John Morra accepted the application of Alain Martel (9-7). These new members didn’t stay long, however, as Torangeau was shown the door (9-8) by Paul Potier after he scratched on the final break shot and Alain Martel followed him out (9-5) at the urging of Brian Butler.
Butler and Potier then merged near the end of the bracket. The merge turned into a crash for Paul Potier as he was cemented in fourth place by Butler (9-3). But Butler’s day was not yet over. He had to face the loser of the A-side final between Hjorliefson and Morra. When Morra won the hot seat (9-5) Hjorliefson went over to duke it out with Butler. Here Hjorliefson earned his right to a rematch with Morra by dismantling Butler (9-4) and tripping the light fantastic back to the show table to flail once again with his nemesis Morra.

Wright Wins on Tri-State Tour

The Tri-Sate Tour held their October 27 event in what is nearly a weekly offering at Edison billiards 153 in Edison, NJ, and Jay Wright could do no wrong as he captured the event. The double-elimination B/C/D handicapped 9-ball action brought in a 32-player field that was dotted by past winners and tour regulars making it an exciting tour event.
On the winners’ side Dave Shlemperis, who was moved in rank from C to C+ after a tour win last week found himself in the hot seat match facing Wright. Both players had just come off tight matches in the previous round, but it was Shlemperis who burst ahead with the 6-2 defeat over Wright.
The one-loss side quickly sieved the remaining players to bring the event to a finale. Ron Mason drilled Stephen Brush 6-2 in the quarterfinals only to be drilled in return by the same margin courtesy of Wright in the semifinals. Wright then, with revenge in his eyes, came at Shlemperis with all he had and managed to overtake him 8-6 to claim the event.

Kong is King on Joss Billiard TourJoss Northeast 9-ball Tour / Parsippany, NJ

The Joss Northeast 9-ball Tour streaked into Comet billiards in Parsippany, NJ, over the October 27-28 weekend where Joey Kong was crowned king after earning his first tour win and going undefeated in the process besting the 39-player field.
Clearing up the late action on the winners’ side Kong slipped past tournament director Mike Zuglan 9-8 to earn a rest in the hot seat. On the one-loss side the remaining players were fighting for the right to stay alive. Past winner Marc Vidal eliminated Jeremy Sossei double-hill while WPBA pro Karen Corr ousted Tom Walter 9-3. Corr stayed in gear, knocking out Vidal 9-3 in the quarterfinals and then Zuglan 9-5 in the semifinals to reach the final showdown.
Kong shocked the crowd by opening with a 7-0 lead giving the pro whiplash. Corr, however, started to climb back and in no time had leaped to only an 8-6 deficit. The problem for Corr was that Kong was on the hill, and he capitalized in the very next game to claim the set and earn his first tour stop win.

Davenport Rocks Southern Classic Open
Kim Davenport, a recent transplant to Atlanta, GA and new owner/partner with Johnny Archer of the Marietta Billiard Club has been tearing up the field at the Viking Cues SCO2’s $10,000 Added 10-ball tournament currently being held at Mr Cues II billiards, www.mrcues2.net (http://www.mrcues2.net) .

Davenport won his 1st match against Joe Huhes 9-3 then lost to local player Paul Song in a thriller of a match 9-8. Davenport then hit the 1-loss side and started tearing up the field by defeating Finlan’s Joonas Ohtenem 9-4. He played long time friend and business partner Johnny the Scorpion Archer defeating him 9-2 , then continued by defeating the South’s most notorios player, Stevie Moore 9-7, Alabama’s George Rothrock 9-6, legendary road hustler Chris The Miz Bartram 9-8. Davenport continued his streak by defeating former US Open Champion Gabe Owen 9-7, Louis Ulrich 9-6.

96 Player Field Fills Canadian 9-ball Tour
The field is filled to capacity in Edmonton for the second leg of the Canadian 9-ball Tour. The Q Club on Stony Plain Road is the host this week in a billiards event sponsored by Cineplex Entertainment, Chapters and Indigo Bookstores, Canada Billiard and Bowling, Dufferin billiards, Stan James sports bookmakers, Simonis cloth and Aramith Billiard Balls.
This is an all-Canadian affair with players migrating to Edmonton from throughout the nation and the usual cream is rising to the top. At the end of day one the undefeated list includes Paul Potier, Edwin Montal, Eric Hjorliefson, Stan Torangeau, Alain Martel, John Morra, Jarrod Spence and Tyler Edey.
There are also eight players left on the desperate side of the charts. Those with only one barrel remaining include Grant Golaiy, Brady Gollan, Eric Hildebrand, Jody Thornton, Spencer Auigbelle, Bryan Butler, Nick Kruger and Gary Hauck.
After play completes tomorrow the all-important points and ranking list will begin to firm up for the year. While there are still six events left in the season all the combatants realize that it is easier to maintain a lead than to gain one and the race will be on to claim the top slots as the names occupying those spaces will be vying for inclusion in international events including the World 9-ball Championship, the World Ten ball Championship, the World Cup of pool and the World pool Masters. Qualifying for these events is even more important to most players than the quest for the $10,000 in added money offered at each event.

The 10-ball tournament, which is the final event of the Viking Cues Southern Classic Open 2, is going into the final day of the 9-day event with only 12 players returning for Sundays play. The billiards event is being hosted by Mr Cues II in Atlanta, GA.

Helena Thornfeldt lead the women players in point to earn the bonus. She accumulated 70 points during the 8 day event followed by Monica Webb with 40 points, Alice Rim with 20 points and Sarah Rousy with 10 points.

Nevel Wins Viking Cues Southern Classic One Pocket
Larry Nevel stormed his way through the One Pocket division of the Viking Cues Southern Classic Open 2 held at Mr Cues 2 billiards www.mrcues2.net (http://www.mrcues2.net) in Atlanta, GA. The event had $5,000 added with a $127 entry fee and it drew 34 of the nations best one pocket players.

Nevels reign of thunder started with a 3-0 shutout over Tommy Wilson in amatch that took only 11 minutes. Nevel then almost grounded out in his next match against Nick Andrews bareley winning 3-2. Nevels storm then picked up speed again while playing Sylver The Texas Terror Ochoa by defeating him 3-1 and then destroying Floridas Benny Conway JR 3-1 which put Nevel in the finals of the winners side against the King of players for the last 6 years of the Viking Cue 9-ball Tour, Shawn Big Bubba Putnam. Nevel was undaunted and blew through Putnam with hurricane force winds and defeated him 3-1 which put Nevel in the Hot Seat.

While Nevel sat waiting for an opponent it was Sylver The Texas Terrors turn to take control of the 1-loss side. Ochoa started his veigh for the title in the event by defeating L.D. Coffer 3-2, the winning over KC Joiner by forfeit before he lost to Nevel. When Ochoa hit the left side of the bracket he terrorized his opponents by defeatng Atlanta’s Paul Song 3-1, Detroit, MI’s Kim Bennett 3-2 in a nail biter of a match then in the Quarter Finals he overcame tough odds and defeated former Reno Open Champion Rafael Martinez 3-1. In the Semi’s Ochoa ran into Ohio’s Shawn Putnam and defeated him 3-2 wihich then set Ochoa for a re-match with Nevel in the finals.

In the finals the 1st 2 games were sharerd by Nevel and Ochoa then Nevel storm kicked in and he won the next 2 games putting the single final match which is a race to 5 at a game score of Nevel 3, Ochoa 1. The Texas Terror refused to go down without a fight and quickly came back to tie the score at 3 games each. Nevel won the 7th game and Ochoa won the 8th which set the score tied at 4-4 with only one game seperating 1st and 2nd place in the event. Unfortunately for Ochoa this is as far as he would get. he made 1 simple mistake and Larry quickly washed him away in the final game.

Undefeated March for McCloskey
McDermott All-American Tour / Aurora, IL

Tom McCloskey went undefeated on the October 20 stop of the McDermott All-American Tour to take first place. Hosted by Rudy’s Place in Aurora, IL, this $500-added event drew 42 billiard players in a double-elimination 8-ball format on 7-foot bar boxes.

In the hot seat match, McCloskey edged Jeff Sargent 5-4. Earlier in the A-bracket semi-finals, McCloskey dispatched Aaron Hernandez 5-2, while Sargent eclipsed Paul Scott 5-3. In the B-side bracket Shane Minihan eliminated Troy Muley at seventh place by a 5-4 margin, while Tony Loper ousted Bob Romano 5-4 at the same placement. In the B-side quarterfinals Minihan and Loper were dispatched into fifth place by Aaron Hernandez 3-5 and Paul Scott 3-5, respectively. In the one-loss side semifinals Hernandez squeezed past Scott 5-4, but Hernandez could not keep up his momentum in the B-side finals, as Sargent victimized him 5-2. The finals almost went to a second set, but McCloskey kept his undefeated march to the title alive in route to a 5-4 defeat of Sargent.
