Viking Tour Debuts in Texas

Viking Cue 9-ball Tour / Richardson, TX
by Rick Davis
The Viking Cue 9-ball Tour made its first appearance in Texas April 28-29 when it brought three divisions of play to The Billiard Den in Richardson, TX. Fighting their way through the fields, Gordy Van Ver Veer, Lance Sullivan, and Blaine Barcus claimed the open, amateur, and junior divisions, respectively, through an onslaught of very close matches.
In the open division a 40-player field came forward, although it was Van Ver Veer and Robert Clark who bested the winners’ side to reach the hot seat match. Van Ver Veer outplayed Clark, besting him 9-7 to send him back into the mix on the one-loss side. Action on the west side was starting to wind down as Jason Pierce eliminated T.J. Davis and Sammy Downs, 7-4 and 7-6, to reach the quarterfinals. Nearby, Jack Lynch plowed through Clay Renfroe and William Howard, each 7-2, then slipped past Pearce 7-5 to reach the semifinals. With only two matches left Clark knocked out Lynch double-hill and attempted to redeem himself against Van Ver Veer. Clark took the first set 9-8, but after getting the attention of his opponent, Van Ver Veer drilled him 7-0 to claim the event.
The second division offered play for the amateurs, where another group of 40 players threw their hat into the ring. Lance Sullivan and Jim Colling were clearly in control, and after they met in the hot seat match, Sullivan stepped forward by virtue of a 7-5 win to be king of the hill. On the one-loss side Bill Etcheverry ousted Claude Gragg 7-3, while Henry Rocha did the same to Chris Ferguson 7-4. In the quarterfinals it was Colling over Etcheverry double-hill, then Rocha over Etcheverry 7-2. The finals offered some excitement as Rocha took the first set from Sullivan double-hill and then managed to tied the final set at 6-all with a 9 on the break. Sullivan took his last chance and shocked everyone by answering back with a 9 on the snap to claim the set, match, and event.
Finally, 14 players entered the juniors division, which was owned by Blaine Barcus and Mikey Gipe, who clashed in the hot seat match before Barcus shifted into gear, besting Gipe 9-6. On the one-loss side Stephan Brown emerged from the quarterfinals 7-2 over Jason Creel but was then eliminated 7-5 by the incoming Gipe. Back in the finals Gipe tasted revenge as he took the first set 9-4, but again the king of the hill answered back to take the final set 7-4 and claim the event. While the junior division did not receive a cash payout, the top two finishers, Barcus and Gipe, each received an entry in the BEF Nationals, along with a very nice Viking cue.

Park Bags Another Blaze Billiard Stop

Blaze 9-ball Tour / North Bergen, NJ
by Rick Davis
Out of the top finishers for the past several events, Shin Park appeared with vengeance on the Blaze 9-ball Tour, held April 28-29 at Gotham billiards in North Bergen, NJ, where he bested the field of 34 players to go undefeated.
Shooting like a rocket to the hot seat match, Park faced David Abraham and pounded him into the ground 7-1 to claim the winners’ side. On the one-loss side tour regular Joey Kong made his way past Mark Panpovic, eliminating him 7-4, while Chuck Pendrak did the same, knocking out Billy Kirsher 7-5. From there things began to slow down as Pendrak took his time in ousting Kong 7-4 in the quarterfinals before the brakes were really applied in the semifinals, where Abraham defeated Pendrak double-hill.
With Abraham back to face Park in the finals he was seeking revenge, while Park was eager to return to the plateau of the first-place finish. No one would wonder long who wanted it more, as Park toasted Abraham again 7-1 to claim the event.

Marvelous Run by Mello

Arizona Women’s Billiard Tour / Glendale, AZ
by InsidePOOL Staff
The Arizona Women’s Billiard Tour afforded its members a chance to warm up for the BCA Nationals in Las Vegas, NV, the weekend of April 28-29. They held an event at Northern Lounge in Glendale, AZ, that attracted 35 ladies, with Susan Mello coming out ahead of them all.
Susan Williams and Susan Mello made it all the way through the winners’-side bracket and met up for the hot seat match. Mello came out victorious and waited patiently as Williams went on to play Michelle Trevino.
After Williams defeated Trevino, she went on to the rematch against Mello. In the true double-elimination format, Williams had to defeat Mello twice to win. An outstanding run of the stripes gave Williams the first game but was overshadowed by Mello, who captured the next four racks in a row to win the first set 4-1.
AWBT would like to thank Northern Lounge for having them. Their next stop, which will be a WPBA qualifier, will be held at On the Snap in Prescott. Dates are June 9-10. Dont’ Forget - the tournament will start at 11a.m. and sign-ups will close at 10:30 a.m. sharp.

Jeanette Lee and Semih Sayginer are the King and Queen of Carom billiards

In the finals of the Queen of Carom billiards, USA unexpectedly found itself in the spotlight through Monica Webb against Korean American Jeanette Lee. The event held at the Novotel in Seoul, Korea drew many Korean fans in the country where carom thrives the most with an estimated fifty percent of the population carom billiard and pool players.
Lee won the lag and proceeded to run a 4 points off the bat. That would dictate the match as Webb could only make one point at a time and the two ladies traded points. Webb had looked dominant and strong in her previous matches but Lee seemed deadset to represent her Korean heritage in carom.
I’m going to win one of these events here in Korea…I promise. said a determined Black Widow.

Lee won the match with a controlled 7-4 win to be crowned carom’s first Queen.

In the King of Carom side, red hot Korean 9-ball and 3 Cushion player Shin Young Park was holding his own against Turkey’s Semih Sayginer. Park led the match at 3-0, 4-1, and then 5-4 in the first quarter of the match. Semih seemed to struggle finding his game, as he did in his first two matches he won.

And then lightning struck on Mr. Magic, as he is known in the carom world, and he turned the heat up all the way up. Sayginer made 11 consecutive points coming from 5-4 down to completing the match 15-5 for the win. The Koreans gave Semih a loud ovation on his terrific play.

That guy is unbelievable. Charlie(Williams) , Mika, Danny and myself been watching him in his matches and we always predict on what way he will go to make the point…and we’re always wrong. He just sees things that we don’t. said an awed Rodney Morris.

I finally played a good match. I’m glad to not only have won, but going out in style. said the charismatic Sayginer.

After the match a special TV show program included Yu Ram Cha, Shanelle Loraine, and Semih Sayginer. Sayginer coached the young ladies earlier on some trickshots and they performed them quite well when the TV lights came on. Then the master brought out some of his best shots in his repertoire and Mr. Magic wowed the audiences further. The finale came when Cha and Loraine teamed up against Sayginer in a race to 3 points where the girls could shark Semih and distract his every shot. The lag was won by the ladies afater Cha pulled on his stroke. Next Loraine was seen dangling over the table sharking Semih with her beautiful looks. Before the girls could distract him again Semih ran and fired a one-stroke shot and made a 4 cusion billiard. At 2-2, the ladies got him one more time and Cha made the winning point . It was a great show filled with laughter for the audience and came in as one of the highest rating shows of the day in Korea.

We are thrilled with the ratings for XTM, said CJ Media Vice President Peter Kim. We’ve made some record breaking ratings here and Dragon Promotions has made a fantastic event making 3Cushion highly entertaining for the viewers. XTM is looking forward to the future events they will be producing for our networks.

XTM is a total entertainment network airing movies, comedies, and sports shows in South Korea.

Langston Undefeated in Tampa

KBP 9-ball Tour / Tampa, FL
by Rick Davis
The April 29 stop of the KBP Lucasi Amateur 9-ball Tour pulled into Planet 9-ball in Tampa, FL, where a solid field of 28 players turned out to be sacrificed to Jesse Langston, who went undefeated throughout the event.
After not giving up more than four racks in any of his first four matches, Langston met Alan Morgan in the hot seat match. Morgan had a much rougher road, giving up less than five racks only once. Fighting to advance to the finals, both players fought tooth and nail until, at double-hill, Langston surged forward.
On the one-loss side tour regular Nomar Paula kept ahead of the carnage until John Tatum steamrolled him 5-1. Nearby, Jake Cox eliminated Luther Blades 5-3 to face Tatum in the quarterfinals. In the quarterfinals Tatum was untouchable, knocking out Cox 5-2, then improving on his game in the semifinals. Tatum sent Morgan home after a 5-1 thrashing.
The finals offered an extended race to 9, and both players were shooting straight, making it an interesting match. After tipping back and forth Langston shifted up a gear and took a pair of racks to give him the 9-7 win and claim the event undefeated.

Ladies Spirit Tour / Holiday, FL
by Rick Davis
Japan’s Miyuki Sakai blew away the 46-player field at Hammer Heads in Holiday, FL, to go undefeated during her reign at the Ladies Spirit Tour’s third tour stop of the 2007 season April 28-29.
On the winners’ side the top four faced off as tour regular Stephanie Mitchell defeated the winner of the last stop, Debbie Schjodt, double-hill. Also, Sakai sliced through the winner of the first event, Jeannie Seaver, 7-4. In the hot seat match Mitchell kept things close, although Sakai was too strong and ultimately defeated Mitchell 7-5.
Over on the one-loss side Dawn Fox was putting together a nice comeback, taking four one-loss match wins, including a 7-1 thrashing against Jessica Barnes, until she was stopped dead by Schjodt 7-2. In that same round Seaver kept herself in the action, eliminating Tamara Redemakers 7-3 to meet Schjodt in the quarterfinals.
With only three matches remaining Seaver ousted Schjodt 7-5 in the quarterfinals but was then knocked out herself 7-3 by Mitchell in the semifinals. Corr Makes a Convincing Comeback

Joss 9-ball Tour / Parsippany, NJ
by Rick Davis
The final regular season stop of the Joss 9-ball Tour took place April 28-29 at Comet billiards in Parsippany, NJ, where a 49-player field emerged to do battle. Once the billiard skirmishes were complete, WPBA pro Karen Corr was declared the champion after a huge comeback.
Late action on the winners’ side wound down to Al Lapena and Bucky Souvanthong in the hot seat match, where Lapena just slipped through after a double-hill showdown. On the one-loss side things were in full swing, as the remaining handful of players attempted to advance further.
Tournament regular and Northeast terror Joey Korsiak blazed through Chris Lynch 9-0 and Johnathan Smith 9-4 to reach the quarterfinals. Nearby, Santos Sambajon Jr. eliminated Ray McNamarra 9-7 but was then upset double-hill by the incoming Corr after she had taken a defeat from Lapena. With Corr facing Korsiak in the quarterfinals, little time was wasted as Corr pressed through, knocking out Korsiak 9-5. Then in the semifinals, Corr ousted Souvanthong as well, this match going 9-4.
With a true double-elimination format the finals offered a long road for Corr, who needed to defeat Lapena twice, but after she took the first set 9-4 it was anyone’s game. In the following set Corr did not let up and, before long, took the set 9-5 to claim the match and the top finish after an impressive five-match comeback.
The Joss 9-ball Tour will hold their final event of the season in August at the Turning Stone Casino, and those wishing to enter must contact tournament director Mike Zuglan to reserve their spot in the $25,000-added event.

John Morra Takes Down Stan James in Toronto

The final match in Toronto came down to a face-off between Danny Hewitt and John Morra. Morra came into the final undefeated, having sent his father Mario left in the ‘A’ side final 9-8 after besting Tyler Edey 9-6.
Hewitt had a rougher road. He lost his first match of the day to Mario Morra 9-4 and then had to wade through the one-loss side to get to the championship round. He first cruised past Marcel Gauvreau 9-3 and then escaped Tyler Edey 9-7 only to finding himself facing Mario Morra once again. At first it appeared that history would repeast itself as Morra got to the hill first with a handsom 8-5 lead, but then Hewitt put together a four-pack to slide by Morra 9-8 and earn the right to do battle with John Morra.
The final match was a showpiece for young John Morra. The seventeen year old wonder owned the table and Hewitt never knew a lead as he fell to the youngster 11-5 in the final match.
The Stan James tournament staff wishes to give their heartfelt thanks to the sponsors who have supported this tour throughout the season. A big tip of the hat goes out to Stan James Bookmakers (www.stanjames.com), Canada Billiard and Bowling, Simonis Cloth, Aramith Billiard Balls, and Layani Cues. We look forward to the next season, beginning in the fall, and appreciate the continued support of these fine companies. It is only their participation that makes this tour possible and we appreciate their recognition of the fact that Canada’s finest cueists deserve a multi-stop tour to allow the cream to rise to the top and to carry the Maple Leaf into competitions around the globe including the World 9-ball Championship, the World 8-ball Championship, next years inaugural World 10-ball Championship, the World Cup of pool, and the Canadian National Championships.

Stan James Toronto Saturday Completes

The first day of play at Shooters Snooker and Sports Club in Toronto found 64 billiard players kick off play at 11 AM. By the end of the day only twelve remained in play to return on Sunday. The biggest surprise of the day was that Edwin Montal, who had appeared to be a lock for the first place position on the year-ending points list, fell victim to a touch of ill health and could not get his game together. Eliminated from play after the third round, Montal can now be caught and passed for the all-important points lead by Alain Martel.
Of the twelve remaining players four have yet to suffer a loss while eight are on the nervous side of the chart and only have a single barrel left. The four undefeated players returning for Sunday are Mario Morra and his son John, Tyler Edey and Danny Hewitt. The eight sticks on the one-loss side belong to Jason Klatt, Jeff Kennedy, John Jorgenson, Alain Martel, Andrew Attard, Erik Hjorleifson, Luc Salvas and Marcel Gauvreau.
For those who would like to follow the final day most closely live match by match scoring will be available at the official tour website www.canadian9balltour.com. Our thanks go out to our hosts at Shoooters as well as tour sponsors Stan James Bookmakers (www.stanjames.com), Aramith billiard balls, Layani Custom Cues, AZBilliards, Canada billiards and Bowling and Simonis Cloth

All-Star Field Attends the Florida Pro Tour

by Rick Davis
The second billiard stop of the Seminole Florida Pro Tour’s 2007 season got underway April 28 at Stroker’s in Palm Harbor, FL, where a full field of 64 players entered the event, many of whom include past champions and top touring pros.
Early action on the winners’ side saw 2006 player of the year, Will Bilbrey, defeat the current Florida Pro Tour Championship champion, Robb Saez, 7-5. Other upsets included Danny Harriman’s 7-5 win over Gabe “The Babe” Owen and tour regular Jason Richko’s defeat of Howard Vickery by the same score. Perhaps the most unexpected event so far has been the elimination of road player Chris Bartram, who was defeated by James Roberts 7-4 and then eliminated by Sam Monday 7-5.
Sunday’s action will bring back the top 16 players, and as of the early evening, the winners’ side matches have been determined. Multiple-event winner Dennis Hatch will face Tony “T-Rex” Chohan, while tour regular Dave Grossman faces Bilbrey. The other two parings will show the winner of the season’s first event, Corey Deuel, against Harriman, while “Marvelous Marlon” Manalo clashes with Nathan Rose.
On the one-loss side, it’s every man for himself as players try to stretch to the next day of play. Raul Alvarez and Dave Broxson flew through their evening matches, assuring their spots Sunday as they look forward to playing Hunter Lombardo and Tommy Kennedy, respectively. Many tough matches remain up in the air such as Monday versus Owen, Shaun Wilkie versus Tony Crosby, and Butch Croft versus Saez. That’s not the end of the action, however, as plenty of notable players still remain in contention such as Donnie Mills, Adam Wheeler, and Richard Broumpton.
While all of Saturday’s matches were races to 7, Sunday will bring races to 8 with a single race to 9 in the finals. The event boasts an $8,000-added prize fund that makes the top finish worth $3,500.
Stay tuned to Inside pool Magazine for the latest updates and info on the scorching hot Florida Pro Tour.

Diamond Billiard Products Obtains Table Rights for Enjoypool.com 9-ball Championships

Diamond Billiard Products is pleased to announce that they have acquired the rights as the official table of the BCA’s 2007 Enjoypool.com 9-ball Championships at the Riviera Hotel and Casino, Las Vegas, May 13-19. The event, to be taped for broadcast on ESPN, allows Diamond world-wide exposure for, arguably, the greatest pool table ever made.
Diamond’s mission is to standardize equipment to professional specifications as determined by professional players. VP, Chad Scharlow, looks forward to the feedback as, For the first time, both men and women’s professional organizations will compete simultaneously on the the crown jewel of tournament play, The Diamond Pro-Am.
Diamond sees this year’s Enjoypool.com 9-ball Championships, held in conjunction with BCA National 8-ball championships, as a monumental occasion. For the first time in billiard history, the professional player and the league player will play under the same conditions. Same pocket openings, slate thickness, cloth speed and color, balls– including the same weight, non-magnetic cue ball. The only difference is the 9 foot versus 7 foot playing surface. All BCA pool League members competing in the Grand Ballroom, on each of the 102 seven foot Diamond Smart Tables with 4-1/2 Pro Cut pockets, are competing under professional conditions. When they watch the Pro’s competing in the Enjoypool.com 9-ball Championships on ESPN, they can take pride knowing that Diamond, and the BCA pool League, care about their sport, and treat their amateur players with the same respect as they do the Pro’s.
Diamond is no stranger to professional events. Since 1999 they have they have developed their tables through input from the greatest pool tournament on earth; The Diamond Derby City Classic. Ten days of 500 players jousting with Bank pool, One Pocket, Straight pool, and 9-ball will certainly put any table to the test.
The U.S. Open 9-ball Championship has Diamond as it’s official table.
The BCA pool League hosts its National 8-ball Championships on the 7 foot Diamond Smart Table. The Smart Table is coin operated and, through laser technology sensors, allows Red Circle cue ball return after a scratch. Now league players don’t have to use the oversized cue ball.

The U.S. Open Bar Table Championships puts the Diamond 7 footers to the test.
Qlympics: Three Weeks of pool Bliss upcoming in November, will host both professional and BCA pool League events on Diamond 7 and 9 foot Smart Tables.
Both Diamond’s 7 and 9 foot tables have the 4-1/2 Pro Cut pockets, again, to standardize equipment, and bridge the gap between amateur and professional players.
The Enjoypool.com 9-ball Championships and The BCA pool League National 8-ball Championships have 281 Diamond tables under one roof at the same time: All draped in Simonis 860 Tour Blue cloth and adorned with Super Aramith Pro Balls. Now that’s a sight to behold. Come to the Riviera and see for yourself.

The Viking Cue 9-ball Tour is recognized as one the premier regional tours in the U.S. today. Tour owner and promoter Mike Janis said, I’ve always wanted to host a tournament in the great state of Texas. I hope everyone from the region can make their way out and support these events.
With this being the first time that the Viking Cue 9-ball Tour is going into the Lone Star State, Janis is doing everything he can to make this event a success. If anyone would like a flyer for the event please email vikingtour2@yahoo.com (mailto:vikingtour2@yahoo.com) with the heading Texas and I will send you a flyer. I would sure appreciate everyone from that region passing out a few flyers on league night or at other events. , said Janis.
Additionally, there is a $10 discount off the Viking Tour Card Fee for any player that is a member of any league. To receive this discount, just bring your league membership card or your weekly player roster with your name on it to get your discount.
